Vancouver Pride Sports Day + annual Pride Run/Walk 2017

Saturday, July 22nd, 2017 was the annual Vancouver Pride Run and Walk hosted by the Vancouver Frontrunners and the first annual Vancouver Pride Sports Day. Taking place at an exciting new venue for the Pride Society at the park at Second Beach. We loved the location. Super easy to walk, bike and drive. Close to the sea wall and the Run/Walk included the iconic views of Vancouver’s downtown and Coal Harbour.

What was exciting about this year’s Pride Sports Day that was different from previous years was the engagement of the various sports organizations including the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Pride Run/Walk emceed by Vancouver’s megamouthmedia, Barb Snelgrove with the assistance from SPIKE – the Whitecaps’ mascot. This year we had special greetings from Canada’s Prime Minister delivered by the Vancouver City Centre MP, Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry.

The Westend MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert also gave a welcome message from BC’s new Premier John Horgan. Sharing with the audience the work that he and his colleagues have worked hard in defending and enshrining Trans Equality in British Columbia.

The Vancouver Pride Run/Walk recorded 302 people cross the finish line, which is similar to previous years. However, direct donations for the charity run/walk was almost double from last year raising $8,655. The running club will have a few more donations come in as well as their final tally on registration which will also benefit their two benefactors: LOUD Youth Scholarship fund and the Pride Legacy Awards.

The Vancouver Frontrunner’s Pride Run/Walk is one of the few races which allow for Gender Variant. This year they had 5 people register in this non binary category. As sports and races like this become safer and more inclusive for Trans participants we will surely see more registering in future years.

This year the warm up was done by David Chacon from Health Initiative for Men. David was the perfect choice to get the runners and walkers excited to hit the sea wall so early in the morning.
